Born in the family of a mechanic in 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, he believed his future was a sport. During the time of studying at Colorado State University, he gained the prestigious boxing title Golden Glove and participated in the American Football League in 1967.
Due he always felt his acting talent he ended up sports activities. Before he stepped into the movie world, he was hired as a staff writer on Leslie Uggams’ lyrical show in 1969. In the year 1971, Amos was pitched in action road film Vanishing Point. After various guest participation and small acts, Amos gained his biggest notoriety for CBS’ sitcom Good Times (1974–1976) before going on to star the central portrayal in John Flynn’s picture Lock Up (1989). The actor is also best known for starring in Future Cop (1976-1977), The Beastmaster (1982), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1994-1995), The West Wing (1999-2004), Bad Asses on the Bayou (2015).
Along with his eminent work, Amos is a person who has been honored with the largest number of TV Land Awards ever. Moreover, he is also a veteran of the New Jersey 50th Armored Division, National Guard and is an Honorary Master Chief of the U.S. Coast Guard.
He also is the founder of Halley’s Comet Foundation, an organization that introduces inner-city and at-risk children to sailing and possible maritime careers.
