How Much is Mikhail Khodorkovsky Worth?
“I am just like three generations of Rothschild family in one – the first generation gained wealth through robbery, the second one was involved into building of business empire, and the third one became the respectable American family”, Mikhail Khodorkovsky told once in his interview. The person, who started from scratch and then became the richest person in Russia (at least he hold that title in 2003) and then lost the most part of his $15 billion wealth, has an interesting fate.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky accumulated his enormous wealth through the oil company, which he founded – Yukos. In 2003 his company was considered as the biggest in Russia and one of the biggest in the world. Khodorkovsky spent millions of dollars annually to create positive image of his company in Europe and USA (because companies from post-Soviet countries were considered as murky and solid investors avoided them).
Thus Mikhail was becoming richer and richer. As business analysts say now, he was becoming too influential in Russia – Khodorkovsky invested millions of dollars into Russian famous political parties, such as Yabloko and Union of Right Forces. He planned to control the political forces of Russian Federation. In addition he wanted to enlarge his business and put his company into international level.
Khodorkovsky’s activity annoyed Russian president Vladimir Putin. Two powerful people couldn’t find a compromise and oligarch lost.
In October, 2003 Mikhail Khodorkovsky was arrested. He was caught just on the board of his private jet. Mikhail was accused in numerous crimes, including murder, tax evasion and fraud. Khodorkovsky lost the major part of his wealth.
Currently his fortune is estimated by Forbes analysts at $170 million (which seems a nuisance in comparison with astonishing $15 billion). But this amount is a matter of dispute. Mikhail Khodorkovsky doesn’t publicize the exact amount of dollars he owns and tells, that he “doesn’t know” how exactly rich he is.
The ex-oligarch was released from jail in 2013. He immediately moved from Russia to Switzerland, where he rents a villa.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s Way On Top
Although Mikhail Khodorkovsky career had a sad end, his way on top is worth learning about. In any case, he demonstrated the enormous business talent and finest financial mind, which made him one of the richest people in the world.
Mikhail Borisovich Khodorkovsky was born Moscow in a family of two Jewish engineers. Khodorkovsky family was quite poor, that’s why the future billionaire spent his childhood in a rented room, which he shared with his parents.
The boy was a brilliant student at school. He was good in Chemistry and Mathematics. Having graduated from school, Mikhail entered D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. He had graduated with honors and then became a member of the Communist Youth League.
As a talented businessman, Khodorkovsky soon felt, that the old Soviet regime was ready to change. Mikhail Gorbachev started his political program “Perestroika”, which gave Khodorkovsky an opportunity to open his own café – an unbelievable thing in Soviet Russia. Later he founded the bank “Menatep” and finally, bought the shares of then- bankrupt Yukos. Mikhail Khodorkovsky bought Yukos through a series of murky auctions. Thus he became the business mogul and later jailed opponent of Vladimir Putin.
Now Mikhail Khodorkovsky is free and comparatively poor. He remains Putin opposer. In March, 2014 he came to Ukraine to support the revolution of dignity. He spoke to millions of protestants at Maidan Nezalezhnosti.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky House
After so many years in jail, each small house may seem a paradise. But Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s villa can hardly be called small. He rents the house in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. The multi-layer mansion is situated near Lake Zürich. It is built of white stone. The home is hidden in thick bushes.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky enjoys his freedom and is not going to give up.
